Base Building

Optimal Base Building Guide

Your base is the engine of your entire Palworld playthrough. It produces food, materials, and crafting capacity, and it supplies the resources that fund every other part of the game. A well-designed base practically runs itself; a poorly designed one forces you to babysit it constantly.

This guide covers base location, layout, work assignments, and the production loops that separate efficient bases from frustrating ones.

Choose The Right Location

Location is the most important decision you'll make. A good site has three things: nearby resource nodes, flat terrain, and reasonable defensibility.

Look for clusters of ore, stone, and wood within easy reach. You'll be harvesting these constantly, so proximity directly reduces wasted travel time. Flat, open ground prevents Pals from getting stuck and makes room for clean production lines.

If raids are enabled, avoid exposed spots where attackers can swarm from every direction. A choke point or a site near a cliff edge makes defense dramatically easier.

Understand Base Level And Missions

Completing base missions raises your base level, which unlocks more Pal slots and larger build areas. A higher base level means more workers, more production, and more room to specialise.

Follow the missions as your primary early-game path. They guide you through the structures and upgrades that actually matter, and each completed mission is a permanent boost to your settlement's capacity.

Design For Workflow, Not Looks

Think of your base as a production line. Pals need short, clear paths between beds, food, workstations, storage, and resource nodes. Cluster related facilities together:

  • Storage near production: Put chests next to workbenches and farms so Pals don't haul goods across the whole base.
  • Food near the center: Feed boxes and cooking stations should be centrally located so hungry Pals don't walk far.
  • Space around benches: Leave clearance so workers don't block each other or path into walls.
  • Beds away from production: Sleep areas can be tucked toward the edge since Pals only use them at night.

If workers keep stopping or wandering, your layout is usually the problem — not the Pals.

Assign Pals By Work Suitability

Every Pal has work suitabilities that determine what it can do. Suitability levels run from 1 to 4, and higher levels mean faster, more efficient work.

  • Kindling: Cooking and smelting. Fire-type Pals excel here.
  • Watering: Hydrating farms and production. Water-type Pals.
  • Planting / Gathering / Farming: The food loop — planting seeds, growing crops, and harvesting.
  • Mining / Lumbering: Gathering ore, stone, and wood from nodes.
  • Handiwork: Crafting at workbenches. Broadly useful.
  • Transporting: Moving materials between storage and stations.
  • Generating Electricity: Powering electric facilities in the mid to late game.

Assign Pals to the tasks their highest suitability supports. A Pal with Level 3 Kindling will cook vastly faster than a Pal with Level 1.

Build A Food Loop First

Your top priority should be a self-sustaining food system. A ranch (for eggs and milk) plus berry plantations creates a steady supply that keeps your workforce fed and their SAN up.

Assign Watering and Planting Pals to the plantations, Gathering Pals to harvest, and Transporting Pals to move food into the feed box. Once this loop runs without input, you have a stable foundation to build on.

Specialize Your Workforce

Don't put a jack-of-all-trades on every station. Instead, breed or catch specialists: Pals with high Kindling for the furnace, high Mining for the quarry, high Watering for the farms. Stack work-speed passives like Artisan and Serious on these dedicated workers.

Keep one or two high-Handiwork Pals on general crafting, and let your specialists handle the heavy lifting elsewhere.

Monitor SAN And Mood

Pals lose SAN (sanity) as they work. Unhappy Pals work slower and can go berserk. Build a Hot Spring early and keep food quality high — both restore SAN and keep your workforce productive.

When you upgrade facilities, remember that faster machines drain SAN faster, so scaling production means scaling recovery too.

Plan For Electricity

At higher base levels you'll unlock electric facilities: refrigerators, electric furnaces, and assembly lines. These require Pals with Generating Electricity suitability and a constant supply of power.

Place power-hungry facilities near your generator and assign a dedicated electric Pal. Refrigerators dramatically cut food spoilage, making them a priority unlock once electricity is available.

Second And Third Bases

Mid-game you can place additional bases, and each can specialise. A common split is a production base at your main site, an ore-and-mining base near a resource cluster, and a breeding-and-ranch base for eggs and passives.

Specialisation lets each base focus on one job with the right Pals, rather than stretching every workforce thin.

Final Thoughts

A great base is one you barely think about. Pick a strong location, design for flow, match Pals to their suitabilities, and keep the food loop running. Once those fundamentals are in place, your base becomes a reliable engine that powers everything else you do in Palworld.
